Enlarged Prostate Causes and Treatment and Home Remedies for Enlarged Prostate
Posted on: June 16, 2011
The prostate is a male reproductive gland that produces the fluid that carries sperm during ejaculation. It surrounds the urethra, the tube through which urine passes out of the body.
An enlarged prostate means the gland has grown bigger. Prostate enlargement happens to almost all men as they get older. As the gland grows, it can press on the urethra and cause urination and bladder problems.

An enlarged prostate is often called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or benign prostatic hypertrophy. It is not cancer, and it does not raise your risk for prostate cancer.
Causes
The actual cause of prostate enlargement is unknown. Factors linked to aging and the testicles themselves may play a role in the growth of the gland. Men who have had their testicles removed at a young age (for example, as a result of testicular cancer) do not develop BPH.
Similarly, if the testicles are removed after a man develops BPH, the prostate begins to shrink in size.
Some facts about prostate enlargement:
1. The likelihood of developing an enlarged prostate increases with age.
2. BPH is so common that it has been said all men will have an enlarged prostate if they live long enough.
3. A small amount of prostate enlargement is present in many men over age 40 and more than 90% of men over age 80.
4. No risk factors have been identified other than having normally functioning testicles.
Signs & Symptoms
Many men with an enlarged prostate have no symptoms. Common symptoms may include the following:
1. Blood in the urine (i.e. haematuria), caused by straining to void.
2. Dribbling after voiding.
3. Feeling that the bladder has not emptied completely after urination.
4. Frequent urination, particularly at night (i.e. nocturia).
5. Leakage of urine (i.e. overflow incontinence).
6. Recurrent, sudden, urgent need to urinate.
How to Cure an Enlarged Prostate
1. Take Saw Palmetto. For minor cases and for overall prostate health, the herb Saw Palmetto has been found effective in reducing enlarged prostate glands. Extracts are available in pill form with 1 to 2 capsules per day recommended.
2. Add Zinc Supplements. A deficiency of this mineral in the body has been linked to prostate abnormalities, including enlargement. Available as dietary supplements, take 30-100 milligrams daily per package instructions.
3. Get a Physician's Prescription. For moderate cases of enlarged prostate, your doctor may prescribe medications like the Alpha Blockers Hytrin, Cardura or Flomax or the Enzyme Inhibitors Proscar or Avodart. These drugs shrink the prostate, restoring ease in urination.
4. Undergo Prescribed Therapies. When medications prove unsuccessful, your physician will advance you to treatments like microwave or laser therapies, stents or needle ablations to enlarge the urethra which will make it easier to urinate.
5. Schedule Surgery. As a final result, when all other treatment methods have failed, surgery becomes necessary, especially if you have developed bladder stones, kidney damage or are afflicted with frequent urinary tract infections. Options include prostatectomy, laser surgery or trans-urethral incision or resection.
